Luck vs RGIII

The two top picks in this coming April's NFL draft took part in the NFL combine this past weekend.  Neither of the quarterback's took part in the throwing drills but both did do the 40 yard dash, broad jump, and vertical jump.  Robert Griffin III ran the fastest 40 for a quarterback (4.41) since Mike Vick ran his astounding 4.33.  Did RGIII's efforts this weekend put him in the position to be the number one overall pick come April?  I don't believe so.    Luck showed off his athleticism this past weekend leaving him as the projected number one overall pick.  Here are some numbers to think about:

Luck                            Cam Newton (Last years NFL rookie of the year)
40 yrd dash       4.59                                 4.59
vertical jump       36'                                   35'
broad jump       10ft 4in                            10ft 6in

As you can see, the numbers are merely identical.  Look for Luck to be the number one pick come April in the pass heavy National Football League.

*Note:  Both Luck and RGIII still have their pro-days ahead where they will workout again for NFL teams, and will both take part in throwing drills.  Nothing is final til draft day, keep an eye on RGIII as he could change some minds come pro-day

NFL Combine

It's that time of the year ago for football fans, the draft is in April, but before that, this weekend the NFL scouting combine is taking place in Indy.  Hundreds of NFL prospects come out and display their talents in various drills that are set up by the NFL.  One controversy this year is the question of which player will be drafted first? Luck or RGIII, many feel that the game is changing and a more mobile quarterback is ideal, but is that the case?  Cam Newton did it last year with his legs and his arm, BUT, he's a special talent, he's built like a linebacker and can withstand taking hits, RGIII is no Cam Newton folks.  He's built more like Mike Vick, who we all know has had injury problems because of the hits he takes.  Look for Luck to go number 1 overall because of his pocket passing ability.

Note:  In last year's combine Stephen Paea broke the record for most 225lb bench presses at 49, keep an eye out for other guys going after that record this year.

Things to think about during the Philadelphia Eagle's off season:

Fake Smile
Although the defense did struggle last season, you could see that toward the middle of the season, things started  to come together for the young and optimistic group.  One thing to keep your eye on is the cornerback situation.  We have three guys who can start on any team in the NFL, and a majority of the time there are only two on the field.  Rodgers-Cromartie was not comfortable being in the slot, he's an outside player.  In my opinion this means of the the three big guns will no longer be an Eagle come next season.  If you guys remember Asante Samuel displayed his frustration publicly last year and could be potentially on his way out of philly.  There are three scenarios that could happen.  Asante could be traded come draft day to move up in the draft which is something Andy Reid has been able to do in the past.  Another option would be trading him for a draft pick, this would free up cap space if the birds want to pay D-Jax the money he's going to want to stay in Philly.  The last possible scenario would have him remaining an Eagle, which I do not see happening because the birds need more help at the LB and Safety positions.
The birds offense has had continuous struggles in the redzone.  Primarily because they've been lacking that big, physical, go-up and get it type of receiver since Terrell Owens got sent packing.  Look for the Eagles to go after Plaxico Burress, whom has already said that he would be interested in coming to Philly.  In his first year back in the league Burress had a decent season with the Jets last year totaling 45 grabs and 8 touchdowns on a team that failed to make it to the playoffs.  Burress showed he can still play with the best of the best in the NFL, and could be the difference for the birds in the redzone.

Lin vs Tebow

As many of you sports fans have come to have embedded in your brain, the new "Tim Tebow" of basketball is Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks.  He has helped lead the Knicks to seven wins out of the last eight games, during that span, Lin is averaging a tad over 28 points per game.  During this streak, Lin has also become media magnet for the sports world.  But the question I would like to ask the sports world is, why is Jeremy Lin being praised so much while Tim Tebow was mostly criticized on television programs like ESPN?  Most of Tebow's criticism had come because of his upfront religious views that he clearly expresses on a daily basis but in Jeremy Lin's press conference after making the game winning shot against the Toronto Raptors, he was quoted as saying "I believe in an all powerful and all knowing god that does miracles".  I have come to the conclusion that both guys are very religious and that's there own personal decision but I do believe that the media should not be talking about that, and they should focus on two great players in their respective sports that may go on to have great careers.

Don't get me wrong, both guys seem like great guys, but I cannot stand what media does to sports.  In an essence Lin and Tebow are alike, they were both winning games for their respective teams, so why criticize them?  Tebow was set up to fail with all of the people who wanted to see him do so on television, and in the newspapers but yet he still turned his team around and led them to a playoff victory.  In Jeremy Lin's case, no one wants to see him fail, which is mind boggling to me because he seems like the same exact kind of guy as Tim Tebow, but hey I'm excited to see how this thing plays out.  If Lin's Knicks start losing games will he be thrown under the bus?

Welcome!

Hi, My name is Sean Breen and I'm a student at West Chester University.  I am majoring in English writing and minoring in journalism.  In my future, my goal is to become a sports writer.  I grew up playing baseball and football and now find myself analyzing the games as I watch seeing things that the average watcher typically would not.  I wrote for the school paper last fall, covering four the of the West Chester University football games and had a blast doing so, interviewing players after each game.  My favorite sports teams are the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles.  I love football and it's a passion of mine.  Expect to hear a lot about the NFL!
